I have completely no idea how to start, and i have been going to websites for hours, for a complete guide on how to start one, but its either you have to pay, or it doesn't give enough info. I want to become series with adsense, but i only want it to be a side job. I dont even have my own website. My email is filled with all this junk mail on how to start adsense, but gives no help at all. i am on a real tight budget, and i have to pay bills, loans… i need to know how to start my own website, domain, and adsense without spending a dollar. i am also confused with the taxes on adsense. I didnt even pay google to start adsense. please help.

Adsense is not something that you start a website for. They are little ads that you put on the website you already have. I have them on my blogger blog, they are everywhere, Whenever you see the words 'ads by google' thats an adsense ad. You get paid when people who visit your site click on them. But to make any money off them you need hundreds of clicks a day. You cannot hope to make a living off them unless you have a hugely popular website.

When you search for something on google (or Yahoo, etc) a bunch of related websites appear on the right hand side of the page. What is the name for this type of advertising? Is there one?

There are many ideas about earning money using your own web site. But need to know what are the best ways. Specially when you do away with google adsense, can you still eran such money with other systes? CJ and Linkshare are not good places to earn money until your site become more famous. The program affiliate with google is actually called adsense. It is a nice thing to have for some websites. However, not all websites are created equal. You need to know who you target audiance is, and whether or not this will make your site look 'cheap'. If you're going to be getting A LOT of traffic in a niche market that advertisers are typically paying big bucks for advertising then it would be worth it.

Two things to consider together for a decent profit.
1: Will you get a lot of traffic
2: Is it in a good target niche

Google pays you for using adsense in this manner. They take the advertisers amount spent on that click and then divide that by either 50% or 75% as your payment. So, if you're in a niche with the average price per click set at $.05 you will not make much money at all, even with a large amount of traffic. If you are in a niche like Student loan consolidation, or mesothelioma then you'll see cost per clicks around $40 for the advertisers. That would be huge profit to you even with little traffic everyday.

So to recape:
Do your research before you list your site. Find out how much marketers are paying for that click, and then decide if you have enough traffic to make that $ value worth while, and decide if it would enhance your site or 'trash' it up.

I have a competitior that challenges me at $6.00 per click per keyword. Is this normal? I think its high. Or is he just high.

Truth is, higher prices give you the impression of more value just by itself. If you want my advice, NEVER compete with low prices, it's stupid. I'd never even mention low prices, instead I'd mention value and do my best to deliver. Then you don't need to appologize for your prices (and shouldn't eighter). I have a friend who opened a club in my city and he told me from the get-go that he will charge more than anybody else around. Of course he made the place more exciting than any other place I know of around here, and people came! Because his pitch didn't include the price but the VALUE. It's one of the most popular clubs in my city right now.

Hi Guys-Don't flame for not doing the searches myself. I have found great quotes about searching but they are from 2003 such as Nielsons/Netratings "120 million Americans use Search Engines each day" or Jupiter MediaMetrix saying 87% of Searches are Paid from 2003. I can't find anything good on ClickZ or anywhere for FREE for say 2006. I don't want to use 3-4 year old data when talking about the Internet? Any sites or links come to mind? Thanks.

I'm building a website, very new to this. Where do I put the key words on the page so that my website will be found in the search engine when those words are typed in?

You can begin with your keywords in your Keyword Meta Data area which is found between the <head> and the </head>. Like this:

<meta name="keywords" content="all your keywords and phrases go here divided by a comma" />

You would then use your keywords and key phrases within the content of your web page.
